Nia Miah Mason is a Los Angeles based dance artist and creative. An eclectic and diverse creator that is always diving into new and exciting opportunities, Nia strives to push herself through choreography and movement via film and stage.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Nia Miah Mason started her dance journey at the age of 4 years old. She trained at a local performing arts dance studio, where she was introduced to numerous styles such as ballet, tap, modern, jazz, hip hop and contemporary. It was here where she also fell in love with acting and the art of writing and producing her own original works and productions.
At 15 years old, Nia decided to focus on other avenues of dance. It was then that she began dancing and choreographing her own pieces for her local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), being brought in to perform as a soloist during community events. During this time, she discovered the NAACP’s youth program ACT-SO, which allowed her to compete in county, district, state and national levels with her self-choreographed solo. Nia made it to the national level in Baltimore, Maryland. There, she was offered to perform in the finale ceremony, which she earned the pleasure of working with acclaimed choreographer Anthony Burrell. Though Nia did not win her division, she returned to Atlanta with a burning passion for more competitive opportunities, so she began training at the competitive dance studio ImPassioned Dance Centre in the summer of 2017. In her junior year of high school, she was scouted out by The American Musical and Dramatic Academy of the Performing Arts (AMDA) at Starpower Dance Competition in Atlanta. Only Nia and one other dancer did not sign up for consideration but were still awarded scholarships. After this life-changing moment, Nia decided to commit to AMDA and moved to Los Angeles, California in 2019 where she would pursue her BFA in Dance Theatre.
As a member of the graduating class of Fall 2022 at AMDA, Nia broadened her dance technique by training in heels, broadway/theatre jazz, West African, Haitian and Bollywood styles, and also explored acting, screenwriting, and voice.
Nia has performed in multiple film and stage productions as a featured dancer under the direction of Nathan Kim, Stephanie Landwehr, Genevieve Carson, Kyle McHargh, Mackenzie Martin, and Lily Chumas. She has also performed in many LA shows post graduation including ReGeneration Summit by The Academy of Motion Pictures, various VOICES Artist Showcases by Derrick Paris (Black, Queer, Latin/Indigenous), Carnival: Choreographer’s Ball, Archetype by Lily Chumas, and the Journey Dance Awards by Jessie Kohn. Film productions in particular piqued her interest in the art of film, direction, editing and producing. She has since created her own short films of her own. Her latest dance film I Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer was screened at Stomping Ground’s Black: VOICES Showcase, produced by Derrick Paris, alongside nine other working professionals in today’s industry.
